This native perennial can be found in moist to wet, sandy soils associated with meadows, floodplains, low prairies, margins of streams, ponds and lakes. Native americans are believed to use the plant as a secret cure for syphilis, hence the scientific name. The leaves were steeped to make teas used to treat colds and fevers.
