A native to the Great Plains, False gromwell, is present in alluvial soils, outwash slopes, glacial outwash, and along drainageways. Plants tend to increase under grazing pressure, as they are not typically grazed. Plains Indians use the marble like seeds in gourd shells for ceremonial rattles.
