Hero of the Month

The Pheasants and Quail Forever "Hero of the Month" recognizes an individual, group or business that has demonstrated long-time support and dedication to the PF and QF mission.  As a grass-roots organization, the foundation of Pheasants and Quail Forever is built on volunteers and donors.  Without the passion, dedication, time and financial support of these "Hero's", we wouldn't be "The Habitat Organization".

Randy Benben
Niobrara Sportsman PF

January - 2010

The Niobrara Sportsman PF chapter in Sheridan County was formed in 1991.   Randy has been involved with the Niobrara Sportsman Chapter since the chapter’s inception, and currently serves as the Chapter’s President.

Since 1991, the Niobrara Sportsman chapter has spent over $192,000 on 654 habitat projects (19,755 total acres).  In 2009, the chapter spent over $18,500 and worked on 38 projects that benefited over 3,715 acres.  The chapter has also conducted 9 Youth Mentor Hunt events for 111 kids in the Sheridan County area the last nine years.

Randy’s chapter financially supports a number of statewide and national habitat programs that help bring additional matching dollars into Sheridan County. Habitat programs include:  Bill Baxter Scholarship Fund, Legislative Action Fund, CRP-MAP, Corners for Wildlife, and the State Habitat Raffle. These programs benefit landowners, outdoor enthusiast and wildlife alike each year and would not be possible without the chapter’s support!

Randy’s passion for the outdoors and conservation runs deep as he also chairs a local sportsman’s club (The Niobrara Sportsman’s Club) that works to get local youth exposed to outdoor activities and conducts a number of conservation projects in Western Nebraska.  Randy also volunteers his time as a Bow Hunter Education Instructor in Gordon.

Randy has lived in Gordon for 30 years with his wife Joyce and kids Ashlei and Andrew. Randy recently became a grandparent when granddaughter Kinley was born a month ago.  Randy has been employed with the USDA Wildlife Services Division for 25 years.  A few of Randy’s hobbies include:  hunting, fishing, collecting antique fishing lures, and cooking.

Pheasants Forever would like to thank Randy for his long time commitment to conservation and youth education in Western Nebraska, and we would like to congratulate him for being the January 2010 PF Hero of the Month!
